Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions are answered below. If you don't find the answer to YOUR question, please contact Teresa at The Back Connection- 215-1708.
What is massage therapy? Massage is a "hands-on" therapy in which muscles and other soft tissues of the body are manipulated to improve health and well-being. Varieties of massage range from gentle stroking and kneading of muscles and other soft tissues to deeper manual techniques. Massage has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries in nearly every culture around the world. It helps relieve muscle tension, reduce stress, and evoke feelings of calmness. Although massage affects the body as a whole, it particularly influences the activity of the musculoskeletal, circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems.
Where will my massage session take place?
Your massage session will take place in a comfortable, private and quiet room. You may request soft music to help you relax. You will lie on a table designed for your comfort.
Who will perform the massage?
Your massage session will be performed by a professional licensed massage therapist.
What happens during my first massage therapy session?
At your first massage therapy session, the practitioner will ask you about any symptoms you may have and will also ask questions about your medical history. The practitioner may also initiate a discussion about what you expect to achieve from the massage session.
Do I have to be completely undressed?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, under garments may be worn. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session.
Will the therapist be in the room when I remove my clothing?
The therapist will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table face up, and cover yourself with a sheet.
Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped at all times. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
You and the therapist will discuss the desired outcome of your session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A full body session will include your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders.
What will the massage feel like?
The Back Connection's massage therapists use a form of Swedish massage. Your session may start with broad strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure and various movement and techniques will gradually be increased. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage works best without resistance.
Are there different kinds of massage at The Back Connection?
The use of Swedish Massage is our primary focus. We also offer deep tissue and hot stone massages. Feel free to ask your therapists about other techniques.
How long will the session last?
The average full-body massage is approximately one hour. There are 90 minute massages available upon request.
Should I do anything during the massage session? Not really; just make yourself comfortable and relax. The therapist will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting or moving your leg). Some people like to close their eyes and completely relax and others like to talk during their session. Feel free to ask the practitioner questions about massage or about the particular technique you are receiving.
How will I feel after the massage session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience relief from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, so it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage to flush them out of your body.
What are the benefits of massage?
Massage can help aide in relaxing chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being. Visit our benefits section.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. It is imperative that before you begin your session, the therapist asks you general health questions. It is very important that you inform the therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care and have an existing condition, check with your doctor before any session.
What is massage good for?
In general, massage is believed to support healing, boost energy, reduce recovery time after an injury, ease pain, and enhance relaxation, mood, and well-being.
