Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/TOT.jpg">

It's that time of year again! Your kids have their costumes ready and are all set to raid the neighborhood in search of treats. Here's how to keep them safe while they gather their loot!

•	<b>Have adult supervision.</b> Accompany your little ghouls as they make their rounds.

•	<b>Map out your plan.</b> Designate a route through well-populated areas before you begin trick-or-treating, and stick to it. Avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots.

•	<b>Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes.</b> Stick to houses that have porch lights on. Also look for Halloween decorations or other clues that the house is trick-or-treat friendly.

•	<b>Stay outside.</b> Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch.

•	<b>Remain visible.</b> Have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight. A lot of Halloween costumes tend to be dark, so make sure people can see your little black cat as she makes her rounds!

•	<b>Try not to cover your child's face.</b> If possible, have your kids wear make-up rather than masks so they can see better.

•	<b>Quality-check treats.</b> Go through your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any treats that are not in the original wrapper or look like they have been tampered with. Try to avoid the temptation to take all the peanut butter cups.

•	<b>Obey the law.</b> Encourage your kids to look both ways before crossing the street, obey all traffic laws and use cross walks and cross at lights where available.

•	<b>Most importantly--have a great time!</b> Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots of candy. If you have sore feet from all the walking around, The Back Connection will fix you right up! Call 215-1708 to book your appointment today.

Massage Can Help Your Sciatic Pain!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/sciatic-nerve.jpg">

Do you have pain that shoots down your leg, or feel numbness or tingling in any part of your legs? You could be suffering from piriformis syndrome and massage can have huge benefits for you.

The sciatic nerve is comprised of several root nerves that originate in the low back and sacral area which combine to make a nerve bundle about the width of your thumb. It lies beneath the glutes, under the piriformis muscle. The piriformis runs from the sacrum at an angle down the greater trochanter (the bony part of the side of your hip, at the top of the outer thigh). It is a hard-working muscle and as such it has a tendency to get tight. Since the sciatic nerve is so large and runs beneath the piriformis, it’s a prime target for compression.

There are several massage techniques for loosening the piriformis and taking the pressure off of the sciatic nerve. Your therapist will use gliding strokes to warm up and stretch the tissues, and may use thumbs or elbows to release tightness. Once the pressure is off the nerve, the inflammation will usually go down and you will feel relief from the pain!

Picking the Perfect Pumpkin!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/pumpkin.jpg">

Selecting the Perfect Pumpkin:

The most important thing to remember: Although we always love to see you at The Back Connection, do not pick a pumpkin that is too big for you to carry, especially if you have back problems.

Select a pumpkin that is completely ripe. A partially green pumpkin might not ripen any further. They can be stubborn that way.

Medium pumpkins are best for carving, but small ones are fun to paint or put stickers on. The littlest fall fanatics always get a kick out of decorating their own pumpkin, and you’ll be happy that they don’t have to use something sharp to do so.

Pumpkins come in a myriad of colors. My favorites are the little white ones! We draw a ghost face on with a Sharpie and they are the cutest pumpkins in our patch.

Selecting the shape is a matter of personal preference. Tall, short, round, squat…it’s up to you!

If you have a particular carving pattern in mind, choose a pumpkin has the best shape for your pattern. The Terminator’s face may look better on a taller pumpkin, for instance.

Do not lift or carry a pumpkin by the stem! It’s likely to fall right off, and then your pumpkin will be embarrassed.

A ripe pumpkin has a hard shell that does not dent or scratch easily when pressing on it with a thumbnail. Do this on the back or bottom of the fruit...never on the face. That would be rude.

Examine the entire pumpkin carefully for soft spots. If you find even one soft spot, go on to the next pumpkin. The first pumpkin will understand.

Look for holes in the pumpkin, which can be indicative of insect problems. You want to carve your own pumpkin and if an army of ants do it first then you miss out on the fun. Plus, ants aren’t known for their artistic flair.

And if you did choose that humongous pumpkin, come see us at The Back Connection! We'll help to fix you right up. Call Teresa at 215-1708 to make your appointment today!

Massage Myths

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/cartoonmassage.jpg">

While more people are turning to massage to de-stress and relieve pain every day, there are still folks out there who think massage isn’t right for them. Here are some of the common reasons people have for not getting a massage, and our answers.

1. <strong>It costs too much.</strong> At The Back Connection your first massage is only $59, and we offer affordable memberships so you can continue to get that price every time you come. There’s also no membership fee!

2. <strong>Massage is only for special occasions.</strong> There are many health benefits that come from receiving even one massage, such as stress reduction, lower blood pressure and increased flexibility. Massage is good for you! Use it as a part of your health regimen.

3. <strong>I don’t have the time.</strong> We have plenty of therapists on staff, so we can schedule your massage at a time that’s convenient for you. We also take walk-ins, so if you find yourself with a spare hour, drop on by!

4. <strong>I’ll be too exposed.</strong> Some people worry about a stranger seeing their body. Those feelings fade very quickly when you’re in the hands of a professional, licensed massage therapist. At The Back Connection, we make you feel like a part of the family and our therapists are happy to answer any questions. We’re also professionals who use proper draping techniques so that the only the body part the therapist is working will be uncovered. We’re here to make you feel better, not to judge you.

5. <strong>I can’t receive massage in my condition.</strong> Some people think that pregnant women can’t receive massage in their first trimester, or that if they live with certain health conditions massage isn’t for them. The truth is that massage is okay for every stage of pregnancy and there are very few conditions that negate massage entirely. In fact, if you have health issues that are stressing you out, massage can be a huge relief! If you’re unsure if you should receive massage, call us and ask. We’re here to help.

Hopefully these points address any concerns, but if you still have doubts give us a call at 215-1708. We’d love to answer your questions.

Getting the Most Out of Your Next Massage Session

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/therapist.jpg">

Most people will agree that massage therapy is beneficial to health and wellness. Before you schedule your next massage, read these simple steps to ensure you’re getting the most from your massage.

•	Before the session, give your massage therapist accurate health information and share your expectations.

•	Your massage therapist will probably use oils or lotions to decrease friction on your skin. If you have allergies, tell your massage therapist.

•	Report any discomfort you experience during the massage session, whether it’s physical or has something to do with the environment.

•	Provide your massage therapist feedback during the massage concerning pressure and speed of hand movement, for example.

•	Discuss any apprehensions you have about massage therapy with your massage therapist. Remember, your massage therapist is a professional who is dedicated to the profession.

•	Remember, too, the therapeutic benefits of massage are cumulative, so the more often you get a massage the better you will feel and the more quickly your body will respond.

Massage Heals the Tissues of the Body

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/massage2.jpg">

Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a luxury splurge that has no real health benefits. To the contrary, hands-on healing helps you unwind, lowers blood pressure, promotes muscle relaxation and boosts your immune system. During a massage session massage therapists use their hands and fingers to press and manipulate your skin, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. The strokes gently move your blood, oxygen, and lymph to various tissues and organs in an efficient fashion that doesn’t normally happen in the bodies of most people. As a result, the person who is receiving the massage experiences a level of physical and mental renewal that is hard to surpass.

Take a look at the health benefits below and discover the power of the human touch:

<p>•	Stress and anxiety relief</p>
<p>•	Muscle relaxation</p>
<p>•	Blood pressure control</p>
<p>•	Better circulation</p>
<p>•	Pain reduction</p>
<p>•	Improved quality of sleep</p>

As you can see, massage is far more potent therapy than most people realize. It only takes a 30 minute massage on trigger points in the neck to boost autonomic nervous system regulation and alleviate both physical and physiological symptoms.

Don’t be afraid to find yourself a good massage therapist and get some healing on a regular basis. When you take care of your body, you’re taking care of your whole world. Call 215-1708 to begin your wellness journey!

Take Time Out for Massage This Easter!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/easter-dinnner.jpg">

With the Easter holidays approaching it’s nice to look forward to time with family. However, the holidays can also be a time of stress for some, due to all the preparation involved in making the holiday a special time for their loved ones. It can be overwhelming when you look at your to-do list and you see special meals to plan, Easter baskets to assemble, a house to clean, a family to dress in their Easter best, and eggs to dye. If only the Easter Bunny could really help you out!

Luckily, there are a few ways to get less stressed and meet all of your deadlines.

•	Set daily goals: Pick one or two things you have to complete that day, such as a room in your house to spring clean, or a short shopping trip to get some needed items. It is impossible for you to try to do it all in one day so if you focus on a few goals at a time and get them done you will be in better shape. As your to-do list shrinks you will feel less stressed.

•	Exercise: Your health and fitness routine actually has a lot to do with your stress levels. Eating right and working out can reduce stress. Yoga is a great stress reliever and it also is a great way to get in shape.

•	Get your family in on the act! Assign tasks, take group shopping trips, and have them help prep the meals.

•	Take time to de-stress: Visit The Back Connection for a relaxing massage. Don’t forget about yourself just because you’re busy. A full-body Swedish massage only takes one hour and can make a world of difference in both your stress levels and how your body feels.

Call 215-1708 for your Easter break today!

Don't Let Your Workout Beat You Up!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/exercise.jpg">

Unless you’ve been quarantined in an underground bunker, you know exercise is good for you. So, if you’ve managed to make exercise a habit, the good news is you’ll be healthier for it. The bad news is you may eventually injure yourself. However, you can reduce your risk. Below are some ways you can reduce the frequency and seriousness of exercise-related injury.

•	If you can, visit a personal trainer or get a coach. They can help you meet your goal by teaching you how to obtain that goal safely. They can also show you how to safely use each different piece of equipment.

•	Warm up and stretch. This will help the blood flow more easily to the working muscles, making you less susceptible to pulling one.

•	Change your routine. Changing your exercise routines help build different muscles and keep your muscles from overtiring. Plus, varying exercise helps increase your metabolism.

•	Be realistic. If you're hitting the gym after taking a few months (or years) off, don't jump right back in the intense workout program you used to do. You muscles need to work back up into the old routine.

•	Dress properly. Don't wear loose clothing around exercise equipment such as an elliptical where it can get caught on moving parts. Make sure you wear the appropriate shoes. Your feet won't tire as easily with the proper padding and support. Not to mention it'll save you the pain of sores and blisters!

•	Eat well and drink water. Be sure to get enough water in your body before a workout. It helps you sweat and keeps your body cool so you don't pass out. Carbohydrates will give you energy to burn during your workout. After working out, make sure to eat protein in order to repair and build muscle.

•	It's not just about cardio. Being in shape also means having muscles that can recover quickly and react when they need to. Add some crunches and push-ups to your routine to help you build your core and other muscles.

•	Take time to recover. Your body will tell you when it needs rest. If you feel sore or achy, you should take a day off or exercise a different muscle group in order to give those muscles recovery time. If you feel tired all the time, reevaluate your workout routine. Don't push your body too hard all at once. Build it up in steps.

After the workout, come see the professionals at The Back Connection! Massage helps decrease the swelling of muscles and relaxes and stretches sore muscles. It also increases circulation, which helps speed the recovery process. Massage keeps your muscles healthy and flexible, so make it a part of your fitness routine! Call us at 215-1708 to book an appointment today.

Recognizing a Serious Injury

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/workoutinjury.jpg">

If you're like many exercisers, you tend to ignore the warning signs of a potentially serious injury.

Here are some tips on how to recognize a severe injury:

•	Joint pain, particularly in the joints of the knee, ankle, elbow and wrist, should never be ignored. This type of pain typically originates from the joint rather than the muscle and may be a sign of something serious.

•	Another warning sign is tenderness at a specific point in the body. If you can elicit pain at a specific point in a bone, muscle or joint, by pressing your finger into it, you may have a significant injury.

•	Another symptom never to ignore is swelling. Swelling is always a sign of some type of injury. You can also experience swelling within the joint, which may be harder to see. If you do have swelling in the joint, your range of motion will be reduced and your joint may feel tight. Compare both sides of the body. If one side acts differently than the other, you may have joint swelling.

•	Finally, never ignore numbness or tingling in your body. This may be a sign of nerve compression, which might be a prelude to a serious injury.

If you experience any of these symptoms your first step is to stop what you're doing and call your doctor. Never work through the pain! Dealing with an injury right away may mean a little recovery time, but that's better than having a permanent condition. While waiting to get in to see your doctor, you can also start a little treatment on your own. In the 48 hours after an injury, the usual treatment involves R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). This means that you should stop what you're doing and use a bandage to compress the injured area (which can help reduce swelling). Then put an ice pack on the area for about 20 minutes at a time, making sure to give the injured area plenty of time to warm up between icing sessions. Then, elevate the area by propping it up.

Once you get your doctor’s okay, come visit the licensed massage therapists at The Back Connection! We can help you work out the kinks and get back on the bike, treadmill, Zumba floor…you get the picture. Call 215-1708 to ask any questions or book your appointment today!

Massage Therapy For Seniors

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/seniormassage.jpg">

Massage therapy is particularly valuable for the aches and pains associated with growing older. With the drastic rise in the number of aging baby-boomers, many massage therapists are tailoring massage sessions to help the elderly achieve mind-body harmony.
Seniors massage doesn't differ much in technique compared to a usual massage sesson, however the techniques used must keep in mind that an aging body requires a little extra tender loving care. When mobility is an issue (for example, if the client is wheelchair-bound) our therapists are happy to adapt.

The benefits of senior massage are numerous. Massage does the usual for seniors by encouraging circulation, decreasing muscular stiffness, and helping to decrease inflammation that may rest in the joints. However, it also treats so many of the typical conditions that arise with age - such as muscular stiffness, arthritis, muscle and bone deterioration, tendonitis, bursitis, and respiratory problems such as asthma and emphysema.
Furthermore, the benefits of enjoying the simple pleasure of human touch and company is priceless for many seniors. Careful massage can help provide the elderly with symptomatic relief and enable seniors to extend the vitality in their lives.

If you have a senior citizen in your life who would benefit from the healing touch of massage, give us a call today at 215-1708. We'll be happy to answer questions or schedule an appointment!

Airbrush Tanning FAQs

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/airbrushtan.jpg">

In recent years we’ve learned more about ultraviolet rays, both natural and artificial, and the severe damage they can do to the skin. This new awareness has led people to search for tanning methods that don’t harm the skin. Airbrush tanning is the perfect solution!

How Does It Work?

Airbrush tanning is a process that uses an air compressor and airbrush to spray a tanning solution on the customer's body. The tanning solution is completely UV-free and is approved by the FDA for use. It is applied by a professional technician, ensuring a customized, natural-looking tan.

Is It Safe?

DHA, or Docosahexaenoic acid, a colorless sugar, is the solution used during the airbrush tanning application. DHA reacts with the top layer of the skin, giving it a golden bronze color. Since there is no use of artificial UV lights, there is no risk of developing skin cancer.

How Much Does It Cost?

At The Back Connection you can get your initial tan for only $20, with hand and face touch-ups for $5. You can also become a member for $39.95 per month and come in as often as you like.

How Should I Prepare?

The night before or morning of, you may want to exfoliate to help remove any lotions or makeup. These have a tendency to block the tanning solution from interacting with your skin, resulting in a tan that’s less than optimal.

What Do I Wear?

It’s up to you! However, please keep in mind that what you choose to wear will determine your tan lines. Some people like to wear a complete bathing suit, while others choose to get the application wearing only their bottoms or underwear to limit tan lines. We do have disposable bras, panties, thongs, boxers, and flip-flops available for only $1 each, as well. Loose clothing is the best thing to wear after the tanning session.

How Long Will My Appointment Take?

Your appointment will take from 15 to 20 minutes, including the consultation beforehand and time for you to re-dress.

How Long Will My Tan Last?

A single tan lasts an average of four to 10 days from the first appointment. However, every person's skin is different; therefore the length of the tan may vary. At The Back Connection we offer hand and face touch-ups for only $5 with the purchase of the initial airbrush tan to help you maximize your color for as long as possible!

How soon will I start to see a tan after application?

Instantly! Our tanning solutions contain two main products, a bronzer and DHA. The bronzer provides an immediate effect, so you will see some initial color. The DHA will react with the amino acids in the skin and start to work within about 24 hours. Your color will be at its darkest on the third day.

Do you have any more questions? Please call us at 215-1708 and we'll be happy to answer them for you!

Get the Most out of Your Massage!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/catmassage.jpg">

Receiving massage may seem like a passive activity, but knowing and following a few important guidelines can help you to get more out of your massage.

Let these massage-receiving rules guide you to a great experience on the table:

•	Keep breathing: While receiving a massage, focus your mind as fully as possible on your breathing to bring your awareness back to your body.

•	Stay loose: If you’re not engaging your mind to relax your own muscles, you’re missing many of the massage’s benefits and effects.

•	Let go: Don’t help your therapist give you a massage. Just lying there like a noodle is really the best thing you can do.

•	Stop thinking, start being: When you’re getting a massage, don’t think about what you should have done or plan to do. A massage is time to be here now.

•	No pain, no gain? No way!: Although certain muscle knots and patterns of tension do respond well to firm, well-focused pressure, you don’t necessarily need to experience it for yourself. Harder massage isn’t always better massage; sometimes the lightest touch can achieve the most profound benefits.

•	It’s cool to be nude (or not): If you feel uncomfortable with any kind of skin exposure whatsoever, you’re much better off to keep that area covered than to cause yourself discomfort.

•	You’re the boss: You have complete authority to change anything during your massage. Want more or less pressure, feel too cold or hot? Let your therapist know!

So breathe deep, let go, and call 215-1708 for your appointment today!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/couplesmassage.jpg">

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, why not give your Valentine the gift of massage therapy this year?

Couples massage is just one of the services we offer at The Back Connection. A couples massage is two people being massaged in the same room, at the same time, by two different therapists. The massage takes place in a large massage suite with enough room for two massage tables.

As for couples massage etiquette, it's fine to talk to each other throughout the massage or quietly relax and enjoy the session. It's up to you.

Couple's massage can also be a great way to introduce massage therapy to someone who has never gotten a massage before. An apprehensive spouse is usually more willing to book a massage on their own after experiencing a couples massage.

Need another reason to try couples massage? Right now at The Back Connection they are only $78! That's right, from now until February 14th you get two full body massages in our couples room for only $78. Call 215-1708 or stop by today to book your massage!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/newyear2.jpg">

According to usa.gov, three of the top New Year’s resolutions are to get fit, manage stress, and save money. The Back Connection can help with all of these!

If you’re looking to get in shape, massage can be a great help! Massage increases blood flow, which helps the muscles to grow and burn more calories. It improves your muscles' range of motion and their flexibility, and having a wide range of motion and maximum muscle flexibility reduces the danger of injury during exercise, so massage can help keep you on your feet. Massage helps to shorten the recovery time needed between your workouts, as well. The increase in circulation helps to eliminate waste products, reducing the ache in your muscles and preparing your for your next workout.

Stressed? Massage was made to combat tension! Your therapist can provide relief from stress by kneading and stretching tense muscles, leaving you feeling looser and more relaxed, especially in the neck and back areas. Massage has also been shown to reduce the heart rate and lower blood pressure! Studies have shown that Swedish massage can lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings and can be a good addition to your doctor’s prescribed regimen. It also reduces the amount of cortisol (AKA the “stress hormone”) and increases endorphins, which leave you feeling peaceful.

If you’re interested in obtaining these benefits but are worried about the cost, worry no more! The Back Connection offers membership plans that provide you with monthly massages for only $49 each. Stop in or call 215-1708 for more details!

Combat Holiday Stress with Massage

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/christmasstress.jpg">

The holiday season is officially here, and with it can come added stress. Massage is an affordable way to alleviate that stress and keep you in good spirits. Many people have high expectations for the holidays; we shop for that ideal gift, want to give the perfect holiday party, or cook a flawless holiday meal. We travel long distances or invite family to stay in our homes. The pressure we put on ourselves to please family and friends can create tension and anxiety, which make the holidays less enjoyable.

Taking a short time out for a massage can release tension, improve your mood, reduce aches and pains, and help you to regain your stamina and inner balance. Enjoying a break in the middle of holiday planning may seem like an impossible task, but a one hour massage can provide valuable physical and emotional benefits that can make all the difference. Massage has also been shown to aid immune system function, which can help you fight off those winter colds.

With added holiday expenses and your time at a premium, a massage might seem like a luxury that isn’t in the budget. But at The Back Connection your first massage is only $49, so for a cost comparable to a dinner out or a night at the movies, you can receive the healing benefits of therapeutic massage. We also have plenty of therapists on staff so we can work around <i>your</i> busy holiday schedule.

Call us at 215-1708 to book your one-hour getaway today!

Massage for Back Pain

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/backpain.jpg">

It's that time of year! Time for raking leaves, time for hauling out the decorations, time for...back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek treatment from a massage therapist. Massage therapy relieves back pain by halting painful muscle spasms and increasing blood flow to the muscles to nourish cells and speed tissue repair. Massage also increases the circulation of the lymphatic system to flush out waste products that have built up in tissues and reduces inflammation, and softens and breaks up scar tissue and adhesions (many old back injuries leave scar tissue that can contract and cause back pain).

Massage therapy also brings about relaxation, lowers blood pressure and stress hormone levels, and reduces anxiety, depression, and pain perception. This makes massage therapy a good choice of treatment for chronic back pain, since it breaks the vicious cycle of pain producing tension and tension creating or increasing pain.

Deep tissue massage therapy uses a lot of pressure so as to manipulate the deeper muscles and tendons. This makes it good for treating back pain caused by muscle spasms or chronic muscular tension. Swedish massage is more relaxing and the gentle stretching and kneading and can also relieve pain caused by tension.

If you overdo it this year, give The Back Connection a call at 215-1708! We'll help you get back on your feet and ready to enjoy the holidays!

Incorporate Massage into Your Fitness Routine!

<img src="http://www.thebackconnection.com/images/scales.jpg">

The holidays are approaching, bringing temptation in the form of parties and family gatherings. As a result, many of us will resolve to lose weight in the new year. Did you know that massage can be very beneficial to those looking to drop pounds?

•	Massage helps to improve your body's function and flexibility, meaning exercise is easier.

•	It provides an additional set of eyes to watch for and prevent any health problems or injuries caused by diet and exercise.

•	Those who hit the gym particularly hard may consider getting sports-massage treatments, which stretch and warm the muscles prior to exercise.

•	Massage reduces the level of cortisol, a hormone known as the "stress hormone” because it triggers the body's "fight or flight" response. When your body is in a high-stress mode, the intestines slow or stop the digestion of food, so the body can focus on coping with the stress. With cortisol reduced, your body functions better, so you feel and look better.

Massage won’t burn fat, but it can help you optimize your weight-loss efforts!
